Today Hungarian government diced to modify the existing decree regarding gas and electricity prices in Hungary, which was adopted by government in 2013. This decision was made with reference to energy crisis and energy price increase worldwide and that EU won’t be able provide necessary amount of gas to it’s member countries. Based on new modifications, from 1st of August 2022 “discounted” price for gas and electricity will remind valid only for those households who will consume under or equal to “average” consumption. Otherwise, for those who will be consuming more than “average”, they will be paying significantly higher price, to be precise, it will be 70 Ft/kWh in case of electricity, and 750 Ft/m3 in case of gas. Prior to this, it was 37 Ft/kWh in case of electricity, and 100 Ft/m3 in case of gas.
Today Hungarian government announced “energy crisis” in Hungary. “There won’t simply be enough gas in some part of Europe this winter”- told Gulyás Gergely minister, who after also announced that the government will slow down the “energy crisis” in Hungary with following 7 specific measurements:
- They will rise production of gas from 1,5 cubic meters to 2 billion cubic meters.
- Government will authorize Szijjártó Péter (foreign minister) to acquire more gas from suppliers. Currently the gas reservoirs filled up by 44%.
- Export content is ordered for energy carriers and firewood
- Significantly increase production of lignite in Hungary
- Restarting of Mátra’s power plant as soon as possible
- An extension of the operating hours of the Paks nuclear power plant is also being initiated.
- Who can help, they should help. Meaning that if some households will consume gas and electricity over “average”, they should pay more, or they should decrease their consumption.
Based on minister’s statement, discounted price will be applied only to those households, who will consume under or equal to “average” usage. Minister said that 3/4 of households won’t be affected by these changes, meaning that 3/4 of households using gas and electricity under average amount.
Followings are exact amount of gas and electricity (average consumption) that households can consume under discounted (prior to changes) price:
- in case of electricity it will be 210 kWh/month, or 2523 kWh/year.
- in case of gas it will be 144 m3/month, or 1729 m3/year.
Németh Szilárd government commissioner once again repeated that the government decided to announce energy crisis to keep affordable prices for gas and electricity in Hungary. But overconsumption will not fit into definition of “affordable energy prices”. But those, who have bigger family, they will be positioned differently from others. For these families limits will be following: families with 3 children will have limit of 2329 m3/year of gas consumption. For each additional child after the 3rd, they will get another 300 m3 gas consumptions. But there wont be any discount for electricity for these families either.
